Oral Health during the Summer Season

Most people do not realize that the changing seasons can have an impact on your oral health. Dry weather can lead to dry mouth, which is one of the causes for bad breath and tooth decay. Also, exposure to heat and the sun can cause dry and chapped lips. Keep in mind that when the seasons or weather is changing, it is a good idea to revisit the oral care we are giving ourselves.

To help ensure your oral tissues and teeth are happy, be sure to:

  • Drink plenty of water- This will promote saliva production to help bad breath and help prevent tooth decay. Drinking water also prevents over-drying and chapping by hydrating skin.
  • Protect yourself from the elements- Make sure to protect your lips with a balm or glass when basking in the sun. When purchasing products, the best will be those that offer moisture and SPF protection.
  • Exfoliate you lips and tongue- You can help keep lips healthy by brushing them with your tooth brush or tongue scraper to clean your tongue to remove bacteria.

Be sure to take precautions when the seasons are changing and to not ignore your oral health. Remember at Thomas Family Dentistry we LOVE to see you SMILE!
