It is common to question whether third molars “wisdom teeth” need to be extracted. In many cases the wisdom teeth are hard to keep clean or do not fully erupt. This can result in infection or can cause a cyst that can damage other teeth roots or bone support. Wisdom teeth can crowd nearby teeth. If wisdom teeth do not have enough room to come in properly, they may crowd or damage neighboring teeth.
Many times, wisdom teeth do not have room to grow properly and can cause pain or problems. Erupting wisdom teeth can grow at various angles in the jaw, sometimes even horizontally.
At Thomas Family Dentistry we recommend having an exam and x rays if you are experiencing the following:
- Repeated infection of soft tissue behind the lower last tooth
- Fluid-filled sacs (cysts)
- Damage to nearby teeth
- Gum disease
- Extensive tooth decay
Reasons wisdom teeth may not need to be removed:
- Grown in completely (fully erupted)
- Positioned correctly and biting properly
- Able to be cleaned
